Fear of Learning Foreign Languages: A Study Across Disciplines

Learning a foreign language can be fun for lot of learners, however, it also traumatic many learners. Countless times, when they are anxious in the classroom, choose to remain silent and passive. This study aims detect fear factors, motives, challenges learning among learners from three different disciplines: business, social sciences, science technology at public university Malaysia. It adopted quantitative method using survey instrument adapted Horwitz, Horwitz Cope (1986). Data were collected 100 participants (Male=50; Female=50) who enrolled learn French purposely chosen represent population. through questionnaires analyzed statistical analysis. The findings this indicated experienced apprehension due their own self-related psychological, self-perceptions, beliefs. Above all, personality traits perceived psychology contribute anxiety level. is reported that psychological barriers like communication anxiety, negative evaluation, test major factors. suggests some pedagogical strategies which may considered teaching practices tertiary level education. will assist both educators more conscious overcome perturbing issue.
